Welcome to southampton waterpolo club!
The Southampton City Water Polo club has a rich history with some surprising twists and turns along the way. The club was formed in 1966, where they finished 7th in Division 2 of the National Water Polo League (NWPL). The promising start held true for another ten years where they stayed mid-table with consistent play and solid team performances. Despite the initial success, In 1978 they were relegated to Division 3, and their last season in the NWPL was in 1979.
Roll forward a few years.
In 1997, the Sport and Recreation Manager for (what is now) the Southampton Solent University - Mark Williams - re-introduced water polo as part of the City of Southampton Swimming Club (CSSC). At the time, the team(s) were made up of students from local universities, and as the popularity increased and word spread, new members were found. These new team members came from all walks of life including where local clubs had disappeared, such as the Eastleigh Waterpolo Club, and from emerging talent pools (literally) such as the Christchurch Seagulls Waterpolo Club.
In 2012 the committee - Mark Williams, Toby King, and Jamie Spicer - took the decision to form a club away from CSSC into a fully focused water polo club - known today as Southampton City Water Polo Club (SCWP).
So if you’re interested in trying water polo, the only things you’ll need are the ability to swim, the curiosity to try it out, and a focus on the fun. WHAT IS WATER POLO?
